Privacy Policy: Watch Time Tracker for YouTube
Effective Oct 7, 2026
Watch Time Tracker for YouTube ("the extension") keeps your watch-time data on your own device. If you choose to sign in with Google, it also keeps a copy in your own Google Drive.
The developer runs no server and never receives, sees, sells or shares your data. This policy explains what is stored, where it is stored, and how you can delete it.
What the extension records
While you watch YouTube in a browser where the extension is installed, it records:
- Watch time. How long videos and Shorts play, added up into totals per minute, per day and per month.
- Channels. For normal videos only, the channel's name and public channel ID, with your total watch time for that channel.
- Display choices. Which graph range you picked, and whether sections are open or minimised.
- An installation ID. A random ID for this copy of the extension. It is used only to combine your own devices without counting anything twice, and is not linked to your identity.
- Your Google account email address, only if you sign in. It is used to show which account the extension syncs with, and is hidden on screen until you click to reveal it.
The extension does not record:
- the titles or addresses of the videos you watch, or a list of which videos you watched
- your searches, comments, likes or subscriptions
- anything you do on websites other than youtube.com
- your password or any payment details
It uses no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind.
Where your data is kept
Your data can be in up to three places, and you control each one:
- On your device. The data is always saved in the browser's own extension storage on your computer.
- In your own Google Drive, if you sign in. The extension keeps a copy in a hidden app-data folder in your Drive. Only this extension can read that folder. The copy is held by Google under your Google account and Google's own terms.
- In backup files, if you export one. A backup is an ordinary file saved to your downloads folder. What happens to it is up to you.
The developer has no access to any of these.
Google sign-in and Google user data
Signing in is optional. The extension works fully without it.
- Sign-in happens on Google's own page. The extension never sees your password.
- It asks for one permission. That permission lets it see, create and delete its own data in your Google Drive. It cannot see or change any of your other files.
- It receives two things from Google. The first is a short-lived access token, kept in memory only and never written to disk. The second is your account's email address.
- It uses them for one purpose. The token is used only to read and write the extension's own data file in your Drive. The email address is used only to show you which account is syncing.
The extension's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Its use and transfer of that information to any other app also adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
You can withdraw the extension's access at any time in your Google Account, under the list of third-party apps with access.
Sharing
Your data is not shared with anyone.
- It is never sold, rented or transferred to third parties.
- It is never used for advertising, profiling or credit decisions.
- It is never read by the developer or any other person.
The only other party that ever holds your data is Google, as the provider of your own Drive, and only if you choose to sign in.
Keeping and deleting your data
Per-minute totals are kept for 25 hours and per-day totals for about 400 days. Monthly totals and channel totals are kept until you delete them.
You control your data from the tracker itself, under More, in the section called "Your data":
- Turn off sync. This stops the device from sending anything to Google Drive. The copy already in your Drive stays there until you delete it.
- Delete all data, with sync on. Your watch time is erased from this device and from your Google Drive. Your other devices erase their copies the next time they sync.
- Delete all data, with sync off. Only this device is erased. Google Drive is not contacted, so sign in first if you also want a Drive copy removed.
- Backup files. Files you exported are not touched by any of the above. Delete them as you would any other file.
After a delete with sync on, one small file remains in the hidden app-data folder in your Drive. It holds none of your earlier watch time. It holds the date and time of the deletion, which is how your other devices know to erase their copies, and the random installation IDs described above. If you leave sync on, new watch time is saved to it as you carry on watching.
To remove that file as well, open Google Drive's settings, go to Manage apps, find the extension and choose to delete its hidden app data.
Uninstalling the extension removes the data stored in your browser. It does not remove a copy in your Google Drive or any backup files.
Permissions the extension asks for
Each permission is used only for the purpose shown.
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Access to youtube.com | Measure how long videos and Shorts play, and show the tracker beside the video |
| Storage | Keep your totals and display choices on your device |
| Identity | Open Google's sign-in page, only when you click Sign in |
| Alarms | Run the Drive sync every few minutes while sync is on |
| Access to googleapis.com | Read and write the extension's own data file in your Google Drive |
Children
The extension is not aimed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date. Significant changes will also be noted in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
